Sarafina character was played by Leleti Khumalo. She played the role of a young black South African struggling for freedom during the apartheid era. While she has remained relatively silent in her opposition of the racist government in her country, the movement to make the language of Afrikaans the official language in her school led her to protests in the streets with her fellow students. Her anti-government views became even more serious when her favourite teacher (Whoopi Goldberg) got arrested for protesting.

As we all know, it’s not so easy not to recall the Sarafina actors. The amazing actors were part of a fantastic movie which made so much impact on political and historical significance. That is why, during celebrations of the Soweto uprising, a lot of South Africans remember the movie. On the other hand, some of the Sarafina original cast still making waves in the film industry.

I mean, who can forget that beautiful young girl who use to play the lead role in Sarafina? Mzansi’s most loved Leleti Khumalo acted played the role in the movie.

That time, Leleti was 16 years old while acting on the movie in 1992. Currently, the Sarafina actress is 50 and part of the set of SABC1 telenovela Imbewu The Seed where she plays a Mazulu.

Is Sarafina a true story?

Based on the 1976 Soweto youth uprisings,it tells the story of a young schoolgirl who is not afraid to fight for her rights and inspires her peers to rise up in protest, especially after her inspirational teacher, Mary Masombuka (Goldberg) is imprisoned and Murdered.

Where was Sarafina filmed?

Filming. The film was shot on location in Soweto and Johannesburg, South Africa. Darrell Roodt directed, with the script by Mbongeni Ngema and William Nicholson.
